Upcoming formulation: Ecologic® CLEAR
Prevention of Urinary Tract Infections
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most common bacterial infections in women. Winclove is developing a probiotic formulation that will restore the microbial balance in the urinary tract and by this prevents recurrent of UTIs in women.
Urinary tract infections
Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a bacterial infection of the urinary tract and occurs at least once in a lifetime among one third of women. A recurrent UTI (rUTI) is defined as two episodes of UTI in six months or three or more in one year. Between 35% to 53% of women treated for UTIs will experience a rUTI within twelve months. Studies have shown that the urinary tract is inhabited by micro-organisms and has its own unique microbial community. While it is still unknown what causes a UTI, some factors thought to be involved include changes in hygiene, medication, sexual activity, diet or other things that can disturb the urinary microbiota, causing uropathogens to overgrow resulting in an UTI.
"The side effects of antibiotic use have prompted researchers to look into alternatives such as probiotics".
Probiotics work against uropathogens as follows:
They compete with pathogens for attachment sites and nutrients.
They produce antibacterial agents such as bacteriocins and hydrogen peroxide.
They acidify the environment through lactic acid production.
They stimulate and balance the host immune system and inhibit the adhesion of uropathogens to the surface of cells.
Figure : The probiotic formulation Ecologic® CLEAR consists of probiotic strains and functional ingredients and is designed to be active at three body sites. The formulation is intended for business purposes and is not commercial available.
At the moment, Winclove is investigating the interest and the potential for a probiotic to prevent rUTIs. For this, the probiotic formulation will not only focus on the inhibition of uropathogens within the bladder, but it is also designed to work on the level of the gut and the vagina. This will be achieved through a strategic and complimentary combination of probiotics and functional ingredients.
The formulation is expected to be ready in the second half of 2016.
